How to install TabStage, run a session, and fix the problems that come up most often.

Install TabStage

TabStage's Chrome Web Store listing is not yet public — submission is underway. Once it's live, installing TabStage will be the normal Add to Chrome flow from the Store, and this page will be updated with a direct link. Until then, approved early access members receive installation instructions directly as part of onboarding.

TabStage requires Google Chrome version 116 or later.

Start a presentation

  1. Open the tab you want to present.
  2. Click the TabStage icon in the Chrome toolbar.
  3. A separate TabStage Studio window opens and shows a live view of the tab you started from.
  4. Pick a template and adjust padding, corner radius, shadow, scale, frame, title, and subtitle. Enable the webcam if you want it.

Which window to share

In your meeting tool's share dialog, choose the TabStage Studio window. Do not share the original source tab. Once you are sharing the Studio, switch back to the source tab and use it normally. Your audience keeps seeing the styled Studio output, because that is the window being shared.

Presentation and fullscreen modes

Click Enter presentation mode to hide the editing controls, and the fullscreen button to fill the display. Press Escape to leave either mode.

Enable the webcam

The webcam is off until you turn it on. When you enable the toggle, Chrome asks for camera permission. You can adjust the bubble's position, shape, size, and mirroring. Denying camera permission does not interrupt the tab presentation.

Stop a session

Click Stop session, close the Studio window, or close the source tab. All tab and webcam tracks are released immediately and Chrome's capture indicators disappear.

Supported and unsupported pages

TabStage can capture ordinary web pages, including local development servers. It cannot capture:

  • Chrome internal pages such as chrome://settings
  • Other extension pages (chrome-extension://)
  • The Chrome Web Store
  • Desktop applications or windows outside Chrome

These are Chrome platform restrictions. TabStage shows a clear message rather than failing silently.

Troubleshooting

The Studio does not open

Check that you clicked the icon while an ordinary web page was active. If the page was a Chrome internal page or the Web Store, capture is blocked. Only one session runs at a time, so a second click focuses the existing Studio window instead of opening another.

The source tab looks blank in the Studio

Some DRM-protected video renders blank in a captured stream. That is a browser-level restriction. If the page is not DRM-protected, stop the session and start a new one from the source tab.

Camera permission was denied

Open Chrome's site settings for the Studio page and re-allow camera access, then toggle the webcam again. The tab presentation keeps working either way.

Mobile framing looks wrong

TabStage frames what the source tab actually displays. Put the source tab into a mobile or responsive viewport first, using Chrome DevTools device mode or a narrow window, then start the session. If automatic cropping picks the wrong region, use the manual framing controls.

Chrome reports an extension error

Open chrome://extensions, turn TabStage off and back on using its toggle, then reload the source tab and start a new session.

The presentation stops when the source tab closes

This is expected. The session is bound to the tab you started from. Closing that tab ends the capture. Reloading the Studio page does not resume capture either, because the original user gesture is gone. Start a new session from the source tab.

Reload or reinstall the extension

To reload: open chrome://extensions and turn TabStage off and back on using its toggle. That resolves most issues without losing anything.

TabStage isn't on the Chrome Web Store yet, so reinstalling isn't a simple Store flow. If reloading doesn't help, use the installation instructions included with your early-access invitation, or contact support@gettabstage.com. Reinstalling clears your saved visual preferences.

Report a bug

When something goes wrong, the following details make it fixable:

  • Your Chrome version, from Chrome menu, Help, About Google Chrome
  • Your operating system and version
  • Your screen resolution
  • The steps that reproduce the problem
  • A screenshot, when the problem is visual
  • Whether it happens on every website or only one

Please do not send confidential page content. A description of the page type, for example a dashboard or a documentation site, is enough.
